Pakistan’s Struggle with Media Suppression and Accountability

Government’s Failure to Address the Issue Creatively

Pakistan faces a persistent challenge in tackling media suppression and accountability. Despite acknowledging the problem, the state has failed to implement creative solutions. This has led to an environment where governance remains weak, and inter-provincial issues continue to escalate without resolution.

Media Suppression: Acknowledgment by a Key Political Leader

Senior leader of the Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N) and former Federal Minister Khurram Dastgir admitted in a recent interview that the government suppresses media whenever it deems necessary. Speaking to a British broadcasting organization, he highlighted that the expected improvements in media freedom have yet to materialize.

He further pointed out that defamation on social media is rampant, citing instances where fake and obscene images of female journalists and politicians were circulated online. The former minister acknowledged the issue but criticized the state’s inability to address it effectively.

The Global Challenge of Social Media Regulations

Dastgir emphasized that social media-related challenges are not unique to Pakistan but are a global issue. Referring to the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA), he stated that while regulations are necessary, journalists who report the truth should not be restricted.

NAB Law: A Need for Reform

Discussing the National Accountability Bureau (NAB), Dastgir reiterated his longstanding stance that the NAB law is flawed and should be abolished. He criticized the government’s failure to establish a clear accountability framework for public officials.

He further highlighted that balancing media laws like PECA with constitutional civil liberties is crucial. The state must find a way to regulate social media without infringing on fundamental rights.

Possible Amendments to PECA Law

Regarding potential changes to PECA, Dastgir stated that government ministers are expected to engage in further consultations with journalist organizations. Amendments to the law may be introduced where necessary to ensure fair implementation.

PTI’s Demand for a Commission on November 26 Events

Addressing the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI)’s demand for a commission to investigate the events of November 26, Dastgir suggested that credible journalist organizations conduct an independent investigation to establish the facts.

He noted that the loss of an official’s life in the incident was not an act of the state but a consequence of violence perpetrated by armed groups. He also mentioned that if PTI had provided solid evidence during negotiations, a judicial commission could have been formed.
