PPP’s Stand on Water Rights

Islamabad – Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has announced the launch of a coordinated movement against the construction of six canals, emphasizing that water is a matter of life and death. Speaking to journalists at the Presidential Palace, he reaffirmed that water remains the party’s top priority and that PPP is raising the issue at every forum.

Bilawal reaffirmed PPP’s longstanding opposition to the project and pledged to keep raising concerns. He reiterated that the party remains steadfast on the issue of water rights and will not compromise.

PPP’s Preparations for the Federal Budget

Bilawal also shared that the party has started working on recommendations for the upcoming federal budget. PPP aims to ensure that the budget is both people- and employee-friendly. Additionally, he mentioned ongoing discussions with the Prime Minister regarding the release of funds for Flood victims.

Call for Consensus on National Security

Addressing national security concerns, Bilawal emphasized the need for greater consensus in the fight against terrorism. He visited Balochistan after the national security meeting to assess the law and order situation.

Sindh Assembly Rejects Six Canals Project

Sindh CM Murad Ali Shah opposed the federal plan to extract six canals from the Indus in a resolution. The resolution firmly stated that Indus water would not be allocated to any other region without Sindh’s consent. It referenced the 1991 water distribution agreement, which prohibits the construction of any new canal, including the Cholistan Canal, without Sindh’s approval.

Environmental and Legal Concerns

The resolution also highlighted the deteriorating condition of the Indus Delta due to water shortages and declared the construction of new canals illegal. Murad Ali Shah condemned what he called a Violation of Sindh’s constitutional rights and stated that the province would resist the project in collaboration with the people.

Demands for Consultation

The Sindh government has urged the federal government and the Indus River System Authority (IRSA) to engage in meaningful consultations with Sindh before proceeding with any canal construction. The resolution categorically rejected any projects that contradict the 1991 agreement and called for an immediate halt to unauthorized constructions.
