Punjab Introduces New Subject Groups for Matric Students
LAHORE: The Punjab School Education Department (SED) is set to revolutionize secondary education in the province by introducing new subject groups for matriculation students starting in the upcoming academic year. This move aims to expand options beyond the traditional science and arts streams.
New Subject Groups for Matric Students
The SED will offer four new subject groups to ninth-grade students:
- Health Sciences
- Agriculture
- Information Technology (IT)
- Entrepreneurship
Students can choose one of these subject groups at the start of ninth grade and continue with their selected field throughout their matriculation studies.

Aligning Curriculum with International Standards
The introduction of these new groups aligns the curriculum with global standards while offering more career-oriented and practical education options.
According to SED Secretary Khalid Naeem Wattoo, practical education will play a significant role in the new curriculum. “We have introduced four new groups: agriculture, IT, fashion designing, and health sciences. Practical education will be emphasized, with 35 marks for theory and 40 for practicals,” he told a private TV channel.
Teacher Training for New Subjects
Mr. Wattoo clarified that additional teacher recruitment would not be necessary. Instead, current teachers will undergo training to teach the new subjects effectively. “We already have teachers who are engineers, and computer teachers have been recruited. Training will be provided to meet the demands of these new subjects,” he stated.
The overall marks for matriculation examinations will remain 1,100, with the new subjects integrated into the existing framework.
Stakeholders’ Perspectives
Diversity and Practical Knowledge
SED spokesperson Noorul Huda confirmed that the introduction of these groups is designed to modernize the curriculum and bring it in line with international standards. Educationist Rana Liaqat praised the initiative, noting that it would promote diversity and benefit students.
However, he emphasized the need to upgrade science and IT laboratories in schools to support the practical education component effectively.
Challenges from Previous Policies
Mr. Liaqat highlighted challenges from the past, such as non-operational laboratories provided under previous administrations. He urged the government to ensure proper facilities and teacher appointments for subjects like agriculture, fashion design, and textile.
By diversifying subject choices and focusing on practical education, Punjab’s education department aims to prepare students for a competitive global environment while addressing gaps in the current system.
