Upstate New York is under winter alerts as a powerful storm brings heavy snowfall, snow squalls, and strong winds starting tonight through Wednesday. The National Weather Service has warned of hazardous travel conditions across the region.
Tug Hill & Adirondacks: Over a Foot of Snow Expected:
The Tug Hill Plateau and Adirondacks will see the heaviest snowfall, with 12 plus inches of snow expected by Friday morning. Wind gusts up to 35 mph could cause blowing snow and whiteout conditions. A winter storm warning remains in effect until 1 a.m. Thursday.

Central NY: 4–9 Inches of Snow Overnight:
A fast-moving clipper system will bring 4 to 9 inches of snow to Central New York late tonight into early Wednesday. The heaviest snowfall is expected between 7 p.m. and 4 a.m., helping to minimize morning commute disruptions.
Wednesday Snow Squalls Could Disrupt Travel:
Another round of snow squalls is likely on Wednesday, this time during daylight hours. These intense bursts of snow, similar to Thunderstorms, will peak during the warmest part of the day, leading to whiteout conditions and dangerous driving.

More Snow & Wintry Mix Possible Late Week:
Following the storm, cold air sweeping over the Great Lakes will trigger lake effect snow on Thursday. By Friday, another system moving in from the southeast could bring a wintry mix and additional snowfall, though the forecast remains uncertain.
January Snowfall Surpasses Average:
This January has been snowier than usual, with Syracuse recording 34.5 inches of snow, exceeding the historical average of 29.6 inches for this time of year. It marks the snowiest January in seven years.
